2022 Montana Closed State Championship Field Set

The six player field for the Montana Closed are:

Ben Vogel – Defending Champion

Rasul Nazriev – Grand Prix 1st Place and Montana Open

Dan Mattson – Grand  Prix 2nd Place and Montana Open

Darren Stacey – Montana Open

Wilton Strickland – Grand Prix Points

Matteo Nero – Grand Prix Points

Ben Vogel – Defending Champion, Top 2 Grand Prix: Rasul Nazriev & Dan Mattson, Top 3 MT Finishers at Open: Since an out of state player won the tournament the top MT finishers were the 4 players who tied for
second.  Using the Solkoff (the tiebreaker voted to be the 1st one in Fridays annual meeting) the top Montana finishers are (in order):  Rasul Nazriev, Dan Mattson, Darren Stacey, Wilton Strickland

Therefore Rasul, Dan, & Darren qualify for the Closed as the top 3 finishers in the Open. Note that Wilton had the lowest tiebreaker score because he took a bye, if he had played and drawn he would have been above Darren at minimum.

Therefore the complete formula (defending champion, top 2 Grand Prix, top 3 Open)  produced 4 unique names: Ben Vogel, Rasul Nazriev, Dan Mattson, Darren Stacey

Since there were no co-champions last year,  the 2 remaining players qualify from the Grand Prix list. Wilton, despite his bye denying him a seat through the Open, becomes the 5th seed since he is next in line
by Grand Prix.

The 6th and final spot goes to Matteo Nero,  a middle school student, who is the youngest player to qualify for the Closed since Darren Stacey was in Middle School.  Now they will face off in the 2022 Closed!

Congratulations to all the qualifiers !
